In Reno, Cortez Masto Tours Mt. Rose K-8 School of Languages, Highlights Efforts to Hire More Teachers for English Learners

Reno, Nev. –  U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) toured Mount Rose K-8 School of Languages, a dual immersion school that offers an English Learners (EL) program and Spanish-language classrooms. She discussed her legislative efforts to support Nevada students and address the shortage of EL teachers in Nevada and across the country. Cortez Masto heard directly from Nevada teachers about the challenges they face, and highlighted bipartisan legislation she’s pushing to fund job training programs to better prepare the next generation of EL educators.

“I was glad to join the incredible team at Mount Rose today and learn about everything they’re doing to support Nevada students,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “Mount Rose also has an incredible English Learners program, and as the population of EL students continues to grow nationwide, we need to do all we can to make sure they don’t fall behind. I’m going to keep working to support schools across Nevada and ensure all our students have what they need to unlock their full potential.”

“We’re grateful for Senator Cortez Masto’s support and for all she’s doing in the Senate to ensure our students have access to quality education regardless of their background,” said Krissy Brown, Principal at Mt. Rose K-8 School of Languages. “Our main goal at Mount Rose is to educate all students to their full potential, and we’ll continue working tirelessly to ensure they are reaching goals through our dual immersion and English Learner programming. We’re committed to providing an inclusive and supportive educational environment that promotes academic excellence and cultural awareness.”

Senator Cortez Masto has delivered critical support to students and schools across Nevada. Cortez Masto’s provision to increase the number of mental health professionals in schools was included in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which was signed into law. In addition, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law included three of Cortez Masto’s bipartisan bills to improve schools. These bills improve transportation safety for students, increase access to internet for both rural and urban schools, and improve school air quality.
