Cortez Masto Statement on Trump’s Address to Congress

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement on President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress:

“Tonight’s address was business as usual for President Trump: grandiose verbiage and broad proposals and promises completely lacking in substance or direction. Trump failed to offer any real plans on how he hopes to move this country forward. He talked about helping working families, a phrase that has lost all meaning in just 40 days of the Trump Administration. At no point in his address did President Trump mention commonsense actions that would help American families, like raising the minimum wage, paying women equal to men for equal work, ensuring millions of Americans keep access to affordable healthcare, and keeping hardworking immigrant families together.

“President Trump discussed several of his favorite campaign talking points tonight – a border wall, repealing the Affordable Care Act, tearing immigrant families apart – reinforcing the divisive and harmful agenda that drove his campaign. Trump mentioned issues of which there can be bipartisan support, such as comprehensive immigration reform and increasing infrastructure investment, yet offered no specifics. I hope the White House will put forth details on their plans in the coming days so that Congress can get to work. I am eager to see if President Trump can offer us more than jargon and bold promises on how we can create jobs, grow the economy, and continuing moving this country forward.”
