Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, and Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) announced that the State of Nevada and eight Tribal communities will receive $1,890,779 in historic preservation funding. Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen have consistently supported these grants to ensure preservation of historic landmarks, Tribal sites, and cultural traditions in Nevada.
“These federal funds I helped secure will help preserve the rich stories and culture of historical and Tribal sites across Nevada,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “I’m proud to have fought for this funding, and I will continue to work to protect and promote the cultural heritage of all our communities for generations to come.”
“The many Tribal nations that call Nevada home have a rich history that must be preserved and shared with generations to come,” said Senator Rosen. “I’m proud to have helped secure this funding to conserve Tribal historical properties and cultural traditions in our state.”
These National Park Service historic preservation grants will allow for the Silver State and Tribal communities to implement comprehensive preservation studies, provide education programs, and conduct archeological and architectural surveys. The awards will be distributed as follows:
- $1,037,725 to the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office
- $104,613 to the Duckwater Shoshone Tribe of the Duckwater Reservation
- $108,892 to the Moapa Band of Paiute Indians of Moapa River Indian Reservation
- $98,101 to the Paiute Shoshone Tribe of the Fallon Reservation and Colony
- $124,184 to the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe
- $100, 668 to the Reno Sparks Indian Colony
- $99,623 to the Summit Lake Paiute Tribe
- $120,914 to the Walker River Paiute Tribe of the Walker River Reservation
- $96,059 to the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California
Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen have worked to support Nevada’s cultural heritage and Tribal communities. The Senators have passed critical legislation to permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), which protects public lands in Nevada and across the country. Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen have been vocal supporters of the Avi Kwa Ame national monument in Southern Nevada and have both urged Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland to support the creation of the Bahsahwahbee (or Swamp Cedars) National Monument in Eastern Nevada. Understanding the importance of preserving Native heritage,Cortez Masto has worked to protect and support Tribal languages.
