Cortez Masto, Rosen Announce $4.7 Million From Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to Improve Road Safety in Northern Nevada

Road fatalities in Washoe County has continued to rise in 2024

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) announced that over $4.7 million in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law they helped pass is coming to Northern Nevada to support transportation improvements in Washoe County. The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) will receive $3.5 million for its Virginia Street Improvement Project to ease traffic and better connect the university with downtown Reno. Additionally, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County will receive $1.2 million for its Truckee Meadows Safety Action Plan to support road and pedestrian safety improvements in Northern Nevada.

“I’m doing everything I can to make our roads safer, and I’m glad to see these federal dollars I secured coming to improve Northern Nevada’s streets,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “These infrastructure improvements will spur economic growth, protect pedestrians, and prevent deadly crashes. I’ll keep fighting to deliver more resources to ensure Nevada families can get to work and school safely.”

“I helped write and pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to bring federal funding to Nevada to improve our transportation infrastructure and increase safety,” said Senator Rosen. “I’m pleased to have helped secure this funding, which will help keep pedestrians and drivers safe while supporting our state’s economy.”

UNR’s Virginia Street Improvement Project will increase connectivity in Reno and offer safer, more reliable transportation options along the Virginia Street Corridor. The Truckee Meadows Safety Action Plan is part of a broader effort to bring the number of traffic fatalities and serious injuries to zero by the year 2030 by enhancing safety for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen worked to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to create good-paying jobs and upgrade road infrastructure in Nevada. Both Senators have secured funding to improve pedestrian safety, expand clean energy public transit, modernize and expand critical roadways to shorten commute times and protect drivers. As part of her Innovation State Initiative, Senator Cortez Masto secured multiple transportation provisions in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to help Nevada communities plan for and build infrastructure for electric vehicles, make transit to school safer for students, and support smart cities that use technology to solve transportation challenges. She has also introduced comprehensive legislation to develop innovative transportation solutions for Nevadans and promote cleaner transportation.
