Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) announced a U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) grant award of $1,400,000 to support pedestrian safety across Las Vegas. This grant program was created in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law thanks to efforts by Senator Cortez Masto to incorporate her bipartisan Moving FIRST Act to promote smart-city innovations that use technology to solve transportation challenges. Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen wrote a letter of support for this grant last year.
“I created this grant program in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to support innovations I was seeing in Nevada, and I’m glad to see this federal funding coming to Las Vegas to help make pedestrian safety upgrades to our streets,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “I’ll continue to fight to deliver cutting-edge technology and critical support to our communities.”
“Making sure Nevada has the technologies necessary to ensure our roadways are safe, accessible, and reliable is critical,” said Senator Rosen. “I’m proud to announce that this federal funding is coming to Las Vegas to support cutting-edge pedestrian detection technology, making crosswalks safer and more efficient.”
The SMART Grants Program in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is offering up to $100 million in grants annually over the next five years to fund projects that use data and technology to solve real-world challenges facing communities. This specific award will fund the implementation of pedestrian detection technology and AI-responsive signals at high-pedestrian traffic areas across Las Vegas. This technology will save lives and keep Nevadans safe.
Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen worked to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to create good-paying jobs and upgrade road infrastructure in Nevada. As part of her Innovation State Initiative, Senator Cortez Masto secured multiple transportation provisions in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to help Nevada communities plan for and build infrastructure for electric vehicles and make transit to school safer for students.
