Cortez Masto on President Trump’s Continued Effort to Sow Fear in American Communities

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement after President Trump broke apart another American family:

“President Trump continued his assault on communities in Nevada by forcing a father from his kids, a husband from his wife, and a hardworking man from his community. David Chavez-Macias lived in our country for over thirty years and built a life and a family in Nevada that is embraced and supported in our community. David also suffers from a rare genetic disorder and heart complications that require ongoing medical supervision in the United States – care his doctors say he cannot receive in Mexico, his country of origin, and that could lead to death if not received. Despite my repeated efforts to prevent this tragedy, the Department of Homeland Security refused to keep David with his family where he can receive the medical support he needs. David’s deportation is a loss for the Reno community. I am so proud of many in the community who stood up and fought for David and the outpouring of love he received, and I will continue fighting so that the dignity of our community is not ignored and hardworking families are not torn apart.”

“Whether it’s Trump’s attacks on Dreamers, his ignorant words that label countries ‘s-holes,’ or his empty threats to build a wall, this President is causing real damage to families across our nation. President Trump’s deportation force is causing children to live in fear every day that their parents may not be there when they come home from school. I will not let the story of David Chavez-Macias be ignored. President Trump and his misguided immigration priorities continue to inflict devastating consequences on families across the country.”
