Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement commemorating National Police Week and thanking Nevada’s law enforcement and their families for their dedication and sacrifice.
This week, she introduced a bipartisan resolution to designate May 12 through 18 as National Police Week and honor law enforcement, including the five fallen Nevada officers who were added to the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial this year. To deliver more resources for police in Nevada and across the country, she’s pushing for passage of her bipartisan bills to fund small police departments and help law enforcement crack down on the illicit use of xylazine, a dangerous additive to fentanyl.
“Our law enforcement officers put their lives in harm’s way to protect our communities,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “I’ll always fight to deliver for Nevada law enforcement, whether its modernizing equipment, expanding access to mental health resources, or increasing funding for more officers and training. As we celebrate National Police Week, I want thank all of our Nevada law enforcement officers. I will always stand with you.”
As the former top law enforcement official in Nevada, Senator Cortez Masto has been a leading advocate in the Senate for our police officers and is part of the Senate Law Enforcement Caucus. She has secured historic funding for the Byrne JAG grant program, the leading source of criminal justice funding in the country. She recently passed bipartisan legislation to crack down on transitional drug trafficking and her bipartisan bills to combat the crisis of law enforcement suicide and provide mental health resources to police officers have been signed into law by presidents of both parties.
