Cortez Masto Cosponsors Resolution to Defend the Affordable Care Act

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) joined a resolution led by Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) that would authorize Senate Legal Counsel to intervene in the Texas v. United States lawsuit and defend the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), on behalf of the U.S. Senate.

“When I talk to Nevadans across the state, the number one issue I hear about is health care. Nearly 150,000 insured Nevadans would lose coverage as a result of the most recent assault on the Affordable Care Act. I’ll continue to protect health care for Nevadans because our communities across the country are stronger when seniors, veterans, children and hardworking people have access to affordable and quality health care. I’m proud to join my colleagues in supporting legislation that will allow the Senate Legal Counsel to defend the Affordable Care Act’s constitutionality.”

BACKGROUND:

The Texas v. United States ruling declared the Affordable Care Act (ACA) unconstitutional. If the decision stands, 20 million Americans will be left without the health insurance they rely on. Senator Cortez Masto joined her Senate colleagues in a letter urging President Trump to condemn the decision.

In July, Cortez Masto led the Senate Democratic caucus in urging Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Republicans to sign on to a resolution that would have authorized Senate Legal Counsel to intervene in the lawsuit on behalf of the Senate.
