Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) introduced legislation today to improve housing on military bases by calling on the Department of Defense to increase oversight of privatized military housing projects.
“Service members and their families in Nevada, and across the country, all deserve have access to quality, affordable housing. This legislation would direct the Department of Defense to increase oversight on privately owned military housing projects, like those on Nellis Air Force Base, that have been deemed to be in poor financial health, and that have not been adequately maintained as a result,” said Cortez Masto. “No service member or veteran should be forced to live in subpar or unsafe housing because of poor financial management. I am determined to seek every avenue possible to honor the sacrifice and service of our military personnel by providing much needed support to them and their families.”
BACKGROUND:
Senators Cortez Masto and Cornyn introduced a bill on the oversight of privatized military housing to the Armed Services Committee to be included in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for the Fiscal Year 2018. This bill would increase the Department of Defense’s financial oversight of privatized military housing projects in order to ensure private housing operators are operating in a fiscally responsible manner and completing the necessary housing maintenance and upkeep.
