Cortez Masto Applauds $4.6 Million in Federal Grants for Rural Nevada Airports

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement applauding the U.S. Department of Transportation’s announcement of more than $4.6 million in federal grants to repair and improve airports and aviation equipment in rural Nevada.

“These funds will provide the much-needed improvement that our rural airports need to operate safely and securely,” said Cortez Masto. “Our airports ensure that Nevada communities are connected and that our cities are accessible for both commerce and tourism. I am pleased the Department of Transportation has allocated the necessary resources to repair worn-down runways and upgrade outdated aviation equipment.”

“Investments to our state’s infrastructure allow us to innovate and improve our quality of life. I urge the Administration to protect funding to maintain and repair our nation’s infrastructure, and put forward a real plan to create jobs and rebuild our aging roads, bridges, railways, and airports.”

The following funds will be awarded to each city/county: 

  • Owyhee Duck Valley Reservation: $195,081.00
    • This project will fund the rehabilitation of the existing Taxiway A, apron, and Runway 5/23 to maintain the structural integrity of the pavement and to minimize foreign object debris.
  • County of Elko: $350,908.00
    • This project will fund rehabilitation of Runway 15/33 to maintain the structural integrity of the pavement and to minimize foreign object debris.
  • Boulder City Municipal: $1,434,681.00
    • This project will fund a seal coat overlay of the existing Taxiway A, the construction phase of rehabilitation of the existing transient ramp, the replacement of an existing automatic weather observing system III-P to enhance the safety and efficiency of aircraft operations at the airport by providing accurate, current, and site-specific weather information, and the installation of new apron lighting to enhance safe airfield operations during low visibility conditions.
  • City of Fallon: $401,331.00
    • This project will fund and update to the existing airport master plan study to show current and future needs of the airport.
  • City of Mineral: $93,750.00
    • This project will fund replacement Runway 10/28 vertical/visual guidance systems, runway end identifier lights and a precision approach pathway indicator, to make the airport more accessible by improving approaches to the runway ends.
  • County of Lincoln (Panaca): $308,412.00
    • This project will fund the construction of a double pump fuel facility and the replacement of the airport’s existing beacon that has reached the end of its useful life.
  • County of Lander: $143,518.00
    • This project will fund crack repair on 6,000 feet of Runway 18/36 to maintain the structural integrity of the pavement and to minimize foreign object debris.
  • County of Lincoln (Alamo): $533,402.00
    • This project will fund the construction phase of a bypass taxiway to eliminate the need for aircraft to back-taxi on Runway 32, the construction of a taxilane to provide enhanced access to aircraft hangars, and the construction phase of a 6,600 square yard apron to provide aircraft parking for users of the airport.
  • Carson City: $373,206.00
    • This project will fund an update to the existing airport master plan study to show current and future needs of the airport.
  • County of Nye: $217,016.00
    • This project will fund the construction of a taxiway serving Runway 34 to eliminate the need for aircraft to back-taxi on the runway.
  • County of Douglas: $253,125.00
    • This project will fund the acquisition of a power vacuum sweeper for the control of foreign object debris on the airport.
  • County of Eureka: $330,475.00
    • This project will fund crack repair on the existing main apron, Taxiway A and Runway 18/36 to maintain the structural integrity of the pavement and to minimize foreign object debris. It will also fund crack repair on the airport’s existing access road to preserve access to the airport.
