After Far-Right Attacks on IVF, Cortez Masto Joins Bill to Protect the Right to Fertility Treatment

Washington, D.C. – Ahead of the two-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) joined Senate Democrats in pushing to pass the Right to IVF Act to ensure nationwide access to fertility treatment and protect all Americans’ right to build their families.

“When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, we knew anti-choice extremists would continue to target women’s reproductive rights – and now we’ve even seen them weaponize state law to threaten access to IVF,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “Mothers across the U.S. rely on fertility treatments to start or grow their families, and I’ll keep fighting to ensure every woman has the right to access 21st century health care and make their own decisions about their futures.”

Building on the lawmakers’ previous efforts to protect and strengthen access to IVF, this legislative package includes the Access to Family Building Act which would establish a nationwide right for patients to access IVF, a right for doctors to provide IVF treatment in accordance with medical standards, as well as a right for insurance carriers to cover IVF without prohibition, limitation, interference or impediment. It also includes provisions to expand coverage of fertility treatments for servicemembers and veterans, and to update regulations surrounding coverage of fertility care for women with employer-sponsored and public health insurance. Cortez Masto is continuing to work with her colleagues to ensure this legislative package is sustainable and best serves hardworking Nevadans.

Senator Cortez Masto has been fierce advocate for women’s reproductive rights. In response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Cortez Masto introduced the Freedom to Travel for Health Care Act to ensure legal protections for women traveling across state lines to receive reproductive care. She’s championed the Women’s Health Protection Act to guarantee equal access to abortion everywhere. She’s also a cosponsor of legislation to codify the right to contraception, and has urged the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to protect the data privacy of women seeking reproductive care. She took on one of the nation’s biggest pharmaceutical wholesalers to ensure Nevadans can access the abortion pill in retail pharmacies, including Walgreens and CVS.
