In Case You Missed It, Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) celebrated the close of Hispanic Heritage Month by bringing Las Vegas High School’s Mariachi Joya to Capitol Hill to perform at the U.S. Senate. She also presented them with a Congressional Record Statement to highlight their contributions to Nevada’s rich Latino culture.
A third generation Nevadan, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto is the first and only Latina in the U.S. Senate. She is leading the charge in Congress to build the National Museum of the American Latino, which would recognize and commemorate the history and achievements of Latinos in the U.S.
As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Las Vegas High School’s Mariachi Joya group was invited to perform at the Capitol in Washington, DC.
“I didn’t think it was real. You know, like at all here at the airport. And when I was packing, I was surprised, you know, being able to get this opportunity,” senior Axel Rodriguez Olivas said.
“It’s very exciting and it’s incredible and it doesn’t feel like it’s real,” classmate Noemi Flores concurred.
Flores says when she started playing with Mariachi Joya, she never expected to be playing for Nevada’s senators, Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen.
Sharing that culture is what led Cortez Masto, the Senate’s only Latina, to invite the group to perform at the Capitol.
“This Mexican culture, this music connects all of us, right? And it is there’s so much that we have to contribute as Hispanic Americans. That’s part of it is the music amongst so many other things that we contribute to this country,” said Cortez Masto.

So here they were celebrating the close of Hispanic Heritage Month where they were presented with this Congressional statement and the reason they were back there is to honor their cultural contributions, not just here to Las Vegas, but the entire United States.

The music could not be missed. Las Vegas High School mariachi La Joya arrived from Nevada for the celebration, but hours before arriving at the White House they made the notes of the classic Son de la Negra echo through the halls of the Capitol.
The first Latina U.S. senator Catherine Cortez Masto recognized them by documenting her visit in the federal government’s historical record.
“I tell them if I can do this, you can do it too,” said Senator Cortez Masto.
