Las Vegas, Nev. – Today, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) visited Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada (CCSN) to highlight their expanded Meals on Wheels program, which receives federal funding to deliver free meals to seniors in Las Vegas and North Las Vegas during this holiday season. In addition to touring their facility, Cortez Masto recognized CCSN President Deacon Tom Roberts for decade of service in Southern Nevada ahead of his upcoming retirement. She also discussed federal funds she helped deliver through the American Rescue Plan and other federal legislation to support CCSN’s food pantry and services.
“Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada is a lifeline for so many in our community, especially during the holiday season, and I’m proud to deliver critical funding to support their incredible work,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “This expanded Meals on Wheels program is making a real difference for seniors in Southern Nevada, and I’m glad I could also join to recognize my friend Deacon Tom Roberts for his leadership and years of service to Las Vegas. I’ll continue fighting to ensure every Nevada family has access to nutritious meals and other essential resources.”
“Senator Cortez Masto has long supported our organization, and we thank her for recognizing just how impactful and crucial Meals on Wheels is for the vulnerable members of our community,” said Deacon Tom Roberts, President and CEO of Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada. “With continued federal funding, we will be able to expand the initiative even further and remain steadfast in our commitment to helping homebound seniors and combating hunger in Southern Nevada.”
Deacon Tom Roberts has led CCSN since 2013, overseeing critical programs that support Southern Nevadans, including shelter services, food assistance, and meal delivery for Nevada seniors. CCNS’s Meals on Wheels program delivers meals to thousands of seniors and its food pantry helps feed hundreds of families every week.
Cortez Masto has been a champion for Nevada families and seniors, securing federal funding for key food security services to address the needs of Nevada’s growing communities. She supports reauthorizing federal legislation to provide vital resources to local organizations like CCSN, helping ensure more seniors have access to healthy meals at home and lowering their health care costs. She passed legislation to allow Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices and cap the cost of insulin at $35-a-month for Medicare recipients through the Inflation Reduction Act.
