ICYMI: Cortez Masto Urges Biden Administration to Act Now to Protect TPS and DACA Recipients

In Case You Missed It, Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) is leading efforts urging President Joe Biden to complete important work to protect long-term immigrant communities before the end of his term. Cortez Masto: “I’ve been reaching out to the current administration within the months that they have left to ask them to really take action. They legally can take action to extend TPS status to so many who are already…here, working, contributing to our economy, and they legally qualify to have their TPS status extended because the countries they come from are still in horrific conditions.

The other thing that you talked about are for our dreamers, my ask of the administration is also we need to quickly process these DACA applications, Dreamers who come to this country.

This is the only country they know. They came as young children. They want to be a part of the community and the country that they grew up in. They were on the front lines of the pandemic for us. […]

The administration has the legal authority to do that, and I’m just asking them to utilize their authority.”

MSNBC Morning Joe (Broadcast)

Cortez Masto: “Right now, the President has the legal ability to do this. These countries that you talked about already, really there are horrific conditions. They satisfy what we have passed in Congress, the laws, to allow the president to take action to provide TPS status. […]

We need to make sure our DREAMers also have the ability to stay here, continue to be a part of the country that they grew up in because unfortunately, as you have identified, the next administration is going to come in and there’s going to be chaos around immigration and mass deportation. We’ve already seen it.”

When President Trump was in office the first time, I can tell you the calls to my office and the chaos that he created around immigration and separating families. […]

That’s why I’m asking the Administration to come in and take the action that they can now to protect some of the immigrant community, TPS recipients, DACA recipients, and make sure that at least we’re bringing certainty to them and keeping their families together.”
