Cortez Masto Is The Senior Hispanic Democrat In The Senate
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement after the Senate passage of her bipartisan resolution with Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) formally recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month—which is celebrated from September 15th through October 15th.
“Hispanic Heritage Month always reminds me how much the Latino community has grown across our country since my grandfather first came to Nevada from Mexico. That’s why I’m proud the Senate passed my bipartisan resolution celebrating our culture and recognizing our accomplishments,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “Latino history is American history, and I’ll keep fighting to honor our Latino community’s contributions to the U.S. and make sure the American Dream is within reach for everyone.”
“The millions of Hispanics who call Texas home help fuel our economy and contribute in countless ways to Texas’ vibrant culture,” said Senator Cornyn. “As we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, this resolution will honor the more than 11 million Hispanic-Americans who have embraced Texas’ many opportunities and recognize their profound and lasting impact on the Lone Star State.”

A third generation Nevadan, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto is the first and only Latina in the U.S. Senate and the highest ranking Hispanic Senator in the Democratic Caucus. She passed bipartisan legislation that was signed into law to create a new series of commemorative circulating coins highlighting remarkable American women trailblazers in the U.S.—including Latinas like Celia Cruz, suffragist and educator Nina Otero-Warren, and journalist and civil rights activist Jovita Idar. She is leading the charge in Congress to build the National Museum of the American Latino, which would recognize and commemorate the history and achievements of Latinos in the U.S.
