Cortez Masto tells the traumatic story of Lauren Miller, a woman from Texas who was forced to leave her state just to get the lifesaving reproductive care she needed.
Washington, D.C. – Following the two-year anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) blasted anti-choice politicians for working to restrict women’s constitutional right to travel across state lines to access an abortion. On the Senate floor, Cortez Masto sought unanimous consent to pass her bill, the Freedom to Travel for Health Care Act, which would stop states with abortion bans from limiting travel for reproductive health care services. Anti-choice Republicans blocked it.
“Women across this country know the truth: anti-choice politicians want to control women. They don’t want women leaving the confines of their states with abortion bans, and they don’t want us to have bodily autonomy,” said Cortez Masto before calling on her colleagues to pass her Freedom to Travel for Health Care Act. “Well, I stand with the vast majority of Americans who believe that politicians should have no say in a woman’s health care decisions. Women like Lauren Miller deserve access to lifesaving care regardless of the state they live in. That’s why we must pass the Freedom to Travel for Health Care Act now.”
“We need legislation that’s going to protect women so they can access this 21st century medication when they need it and come to states like mine without the fear of being prosecuted,” said Cortez Masto after anti-choice Republicans blocked her bill. “It will always be about giving the freedom to women for their access to health care in this country. And I will tell you this: my colleagues and I will never stop fighting for this. It is too important for our children, our young girls, and their future.”
Senator Cortez Masto has been a fierce advocate for women’s reproductive rights. Last month, she introduced legislation to repeal the Comstock Act, which Republicans and anti-choice extremists want to misuse to ban abortion nationwide. She’s championed the Women’s Health Protection Act and is a cosponsor of legislation to codify the right to contraception and IVF. She took on one of the nation’s biggest pharmaceutical wholesalers to ensure Nevadans can access the abortion pill in retail pharmacies, including Walgreens and CVS.
