Cortez Masto Joins Legislation to Protect Call Center Jobs in U.S. and Protect Consumers’ Personal Data

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Bob Casey (D-Pa.), and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) reintroduced the United States Call Center Worker and Consumer Protection Act to protect American call center jobs from being outsourced overseas. In recent years, many call center operators have shifted operations overseas and shut down or downsized their U.S. operations. This alarming trend not only harms American workers, but American consumers whose data could be at risk under the control of foreign companies and governments.

“We shouldn’t reward call center companies that outsource Nevada jobs and put consumers’ personal data at risk,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “This legislation helps hold companies accountable and encourages businesses to remain in the U.S. I will keep fighting to keep American jobs here and stand up for our working families in Nevada.”

In addition to Cortez Masto, Casey, and Brown, the bill is cosponsored by U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Ct.), Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.), Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), John Fetterman (D-Pa.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).

The United States Call Center Worker and Consumer Protection Act is supported by the Communications Workers of America (CWA).

As the former top law enforcement official in Nevada, Senator Cortez Masto has been a leading voice in the fight to protect consumers from fraud throughout her career. She sounded the alarm on increasing check fraud scams, which cost consumers more than $800 million last year. She introduced legislation to protect and support whistleblowers reporting wrongdoing to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and her bipartisan legislation to deter disruptive and potentially harmful phone calls and texts was signed into law in 2020.
