Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) celebrated Black History Month in Reno, Nevada after helping pass a bipartisan resolution in the Senate honoring the immeasurable contributions Black Americans have made to our country.
“Every year, it’s an honor to celebrate Black History Month and recognize the history, culture, and contributions of Black Americans in Nevada and across the nation,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “Black Nevadans have been at the center of our state’s history since the beginning, and I’ll keep working to ensure that communities all across Nevada have equal access to opportunity and success.”
While in Reno, Cortez Masto joined the Northern Nevada Black Cultural Awareness Society (NNBCAS) at Fam Fest 2024 and highlighted her work fighting for working families in the Senate. The NNBCAS works to educate communities in Nevada through programs celebrating cultural holidays, providing educational opportunities for youth, and exposing the community to quality arts, including music, literature, theater, history, and dance.
She joined Pastor William Lyons Jr. at his restaurant, Papa What You Cooking, for lunch and to learn about his new business. Cortez Masto has been a strong advocate for Nevada’s diverse business community and has introduced legislation to make it easier to start and grow a new business. Her bill to make the Minority Business Development Agency permanent was passed into law in 2021.
Senator Cortez Masto has helped pass a bipartisan resolution celebrating Black History Month every year since she first came to the Senate. She’s consistently fought for Nevada’s Black communities and families. Last month, she called on the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to review the concerning gap in mortgage approval rates between white applicants and Black applicants at Navy Federal Credit Union. She’s a cosponsor of the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act to address the drivers of maternal mortality and health disparities in the U.S.
