Cortez Masto also toured new affordable homes for veterans coming to Reno thanks to her advocacy
In Case You Missed It, Senator Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) is leading new legislation to significantly increase the amount of federal funds available for affordable housing in Nevada and across the country. This weekend, Cortez Masto highlighted these efforts at the new Dick Scott Manor affordable housing complex in Reno. Dick Scott Manor is supported by funding Cortez Masto delivered in the American Rescue Plan.

Nevada Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto is reintroducing a proposal in Washington to address our affordable housing crisis. It would not only fund the building of affordable housing, but also continue to help people pay rent.
Cortez Masto said, “It’s affordable housing for everyone. It’s affordable housing for our workforce. It’s affordable housing for veterans. It’s affordable housing for seniors. So, all of that is wrapped into this idea that we should be able to not only build but ensure that that housing exists and is affordable for so many in our community.”
Now, since the early 90’s, the HOME Investment Partnership Program has helped build more than 8,000 affordable units and rentals in Nevada. Cortez Masto’s proposal would triple the funding from last year’s budget.

With help from federal dollars, local organizations step up. The Reno Housing Authority is deferring developing fees to get the project across the finish line. Senator Cortez Masto is involved with a myriad of funding opportunities in Washington D.C. to provide for affordable housing for not just vets, but all people, in northern Nevada.
Cortez Masto said, “The low-income housing tax credit that is available, …I am hoping that we actually reauthorize and provide more opportunities to build housing like this. There’s a partnership between that [program] and the HOME investment program… I’ve actually just introduced [legislation to support the HOME program]. The HOME program has existed in HUD since 1994. It’s a great program, but it’s dated, and so, we actually need to make it flexible and reflect what we’re seeing in our communities now.”

Cortez Masto joined Reno Housing Authority staff and board of commissioners to tour the new Dick Scott Manor affordable housing complex. This project is supported by funding from the American Rescue Plan. Cortez Masto spoke about the collaboration of federal and local support to address these kinds of needs in Northern Nevada.
Cortez Masto said, “Having a roof over your head. It’s healthcare, it’s stability, it’s so many things, it’s security. And there are too many that just cannot afford it or have that opportunity. So, that’s why this partnership is so key.”
The new affordable housing complex will provide 12 brand new units of permanent supportive housing for low income and homeless military veterans and plans to be available for northern Nevada veterans sometime later this year.

Nevada’s senior senator got a firsthand look today at what’s being done to build more affordable housing for our veterans. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto met with the Reno Housing Authority as they toured the Dick Scott Manor affordable housing complex on 8th street.
When completed, it will provide 12-brand new units of permanent supportive housing for low-income and homeless military veterans. The project is supported by funding through the American Rescue Plan.
The senator says it’s important to point out that projects like this aren’t just possible because of financing at the federal level but because of significant investments from local governments too.

Reno Housing Authority gave Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, a tour of a new housing complex just for veterans in Reno late last week.
The complex on East Eighth, about a block from the county building, called Dick Scott Manor, will offer 12 affordable apartments to veterans. RHA’s doctor, Hillary Lopez, says the proximity of the complex is a huge benefit for the vets moving in later this year.

Senator Cortez Masto said, “Right now, our goal is to make sure families, individuals, no matter your background, no matter where you’re coming from, you can get into a home and have a roof over your head. Whether that’s homeownership or being able to afford it through rental.”
