Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement after voting against Gen. John F. Kelly to be Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security:
“I could not in good conscience vote for General John Kelly to lead the Department of Homeland Security. While I thank and respect General Kelly for his years of service to our country, I do not believe that he will adequately stand up for our immigrant communities. Our country was founded by immigrants and it would not be what it is today without their countless contributions. The person in charge of enforcing our immigration policies must be committed to protecting DACA and the hardworking families that are American in all but paper. General Kelly has done nothing to indicate that he will do this and therefore is the wrong person to lead the Department of Homeland Security.”
