Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement in celebration of Black History Month:
“At a time when defending our civil rights is more important than ever, celebrating Black History Month is an opportunity for us to recommit ourselves to fighting against racial inequality. It is a time for us to remember the achievements and immense sacrifices of those who fought for African Americans to be full and equal citizens of this country. It’s a time for us to reflect on how we can continue to build a more inclusive and more tolerant future for generations to come.
“This month, we celebrate the contributions made by African Americans in enriching our culture and communities, as well as their accomplishments in the arts, education, and science and technology. Nevada has seen these stories unfold: like the time workers fought for better integration in the casino industry or when Las Vegas restaurants refused to serve Sammy Davis Jr. Thanks to local African American leaders and advocates, such as David Meadows, Bob Bailey and Alice Smith to name a few, Nevada has certainly come a long way. I will continue their fight to make sure our country keeps moving forward – we cannot afford to go back.”
