The Same Day Registration Act would require states to allow people to register to vote on election day
Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) joined Democratic Senate colleagues in introducing legislation to make voting easier for all Americans. The Same Day Registration Act would require states to allow people to register to vote on election day.
“Voting is one of the most fundamental rights we have as Americans, and it is absolutely necessary to make the exercise of this right as accessible as possible,” Senator Cortez Masto said. “Same-day voter registration guarantees this right for all citizens by ensuring that no one is denied his or her vote at the ballot box. Protecting this right has become even more dire since the Supreme Court struck down key parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the recent confirmation of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General. With Jeff Sessions—who has a long record of suppressing Americans’ right to vote—at the helm of the Department of Justice, our voting rights are increasingly vulnerable. We need legislation like this to protect the democratic principles that define who we are as a nation.”
The legislation is sponsored by U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Jon Tester (D-MT), and joining Senator Cortez Masto as co-sponsors are Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), and Chris Van Hollen (D-Md). Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN) has introduced companion legislation in the House.
