Cortez Masto Applauds $2.9 Million in Grants for Nevada Upward Bound Programs

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) today applauded the Department of Education’s announcement of more than $2.9 million in total grants for Upward Bound programs at the University of Nevada, Reno; University of Nevada, Las Vegas; and Nevada State College.

“Investing in these programs is critical to lifting those with limited means, giving them a chance to break the cycle of poverty,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “My sister and I were the first in our family to graduate college, and fortunate to have parents who were determined to break any barriers to our success. However, there are still so many young students needing support and guidance who benefit from Upward Bound to help them become successful in their educational pursuit. And now that President Trump’s new budget proposal will cut millions of critical funding to these programs, we must reaffirm our support for students in need. I urge my colleagues in Congress to protect funding for these programs and to invest in the future of young Nevadans, and Americans across the country.”

For decades, Upward Bound programs in universities nationwide have helped high school students from low-income families pursue a college education. These programs provide support, guidance and empowerment for students to successfully obtain a college degree – often the first in their families to do so. Higher education programs for students from low-income families are now at risk of losing a combined $193 million of critical funding under President Trump’s budget proposal.

The following funds will be awarded to each university:

·         University of Nevada, Reno: $911,411

·         University of Nevada, Las Vegas: $1,451,433

·         Nevada State College: $540,750
