Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement applauding the Department of Agriculture’s announcement on the U.S. and China’s final agreement to open up the Chinese market to U.S. beef exports. In April, Cortez Masto signed a bipartisan letter urging the President to prioritize reaching an agreement with China in advance of his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“As the second largest importer of beef, the Chinese market will create an abundance of opportunities for Nevada ranchers and farmers – critical for the long-term growth of our state’s agricultural economy. Eliminating China’s unfair import barriers will give Nevada ranchers expanded access to consumers, allowing them to compete successfully in the beef industry. I commend the Department of Agriculture for prioritizing this agreement with China that will finally lift a 14-year ban that has curtailed economic growth of American ranchers.”
