Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement denouncing the Senate and House versions of Trumpcare’s disproportionate impact on the Latino community:
“Although Trumpcare could have a significant impact on all hardworking Nevadans, there are communities that will be disproportionately affected, such as Nevada’s Latino community. Trumpcare would undo noteworthy gains in healthcare coverage among Latino Nevadans. From 2013 to 2015 under the Affordable Cara Act (ACA), the uninsured rate for non-elderly Latino Nevadans fell from 34 percent to 19 percent. For Latino children in Nevada during the same period, the uninsured rate declined from 20 percent to 10.7 percent—a drop of almost half.
“Non-elderly Latino Nevadans on Medicaid now face the dangerous risk of losing their coverage. Since Nevada was one of 32 states that expanded Medicaid subsidies, the Silver State could lose approximately $5 billion in federal Medicaid funding. Considering that 225,400 non-elderly Nevada Latinos are covered by Medicaid (47 percent of non-elderly enrollees throughout the state), Trumpcare would result in coverage being ripped away from thousands of Latino Nevadans, a reduction of healthcare quality, and fewer available services. Those who manage to keep their healthcare will see premiums skyrocket.
“Trumpcare betrays Congress’s duty to represent all its constituents’ best interests. I will continue to fight relentlessly for hardworking Latino Nevadans and ensure that Congressional Republicans are held responsible for sabotaging the healthcare of millions of Latino families.”
