Las Vegas, Nev. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) joined the TECHNOLOchicas Organization, an initiative of the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) and the Televisa Foundation, to introduce young Latinas and their families to opportunities in technology at the Mario C. and Joanne Monaca Middle School in Las Vegas. Cortez Masto discussed the importance of diversity in both government and the private sector and encouraged young Latinas participating in the event to explore a career in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math (STEAM).
“A commitment to diversity is a critical element of success in fields like business, technology, the arts, and engineering,” said Cortez Masto. “We cannot tap the full potential of our workforce unless every student, regardless of race, gender, or background has access to a 21st century education. I’m proud to partner with TECHNOLOchicas as we work to break down barriers and equip young Latinas with the skills they need to compete and excel in STEAM fields.”
Cortez Masto’s address was followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Benjamin Zamora of Univision Nevada, with four young women currently studying or working in the tech industry. The TECHNOLOchicas, Susie Gomez, Madeline Martinez, Madelyne Tavarez, and Amy Villaseñor, spoke about their experiences and answered questions about how to prepare for success in this rapidly expanding field.
