Elko, Nev. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement after President Donald Trump announced he will pardon documented human rights abuser, and former Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, Joe Arpaio. In July, Arpaio was found guilty of criminal contempt for violating an order in a racial profiling case.
“President Trump’s pardon of Joe Arpaio is yet another example of his failed commitment to unite our country after the racist and hateful protests of neo-Nazis and white supremacists in Charlottesville. The President has claimed to want law and order for our country. Yet he has pardoned a man who was sued by the Department of Justice for discriminating against Latinos, that questioned the citizenship of President Obama, and who was convicted of contempt for disobeying a court order to stop unlawfully detaining immigrants. In prepared remarks, President Trump has claimed that he rejects hate. Yet with today’s action he has clearly shown that he has no interest in healing and uniting our great nation.”
