Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement commemorating Native American Heritage Month:
“November marks the month-long celebration of the immense cultural, artistic, and intellectual contributions that Native Americans have made to our communities and to the State of Nevada. Native American Heritage Month serves as an important reminder that we are bound by a sacred promise—the trust relationship—to respect and protect the sovereignty of tribal governments and promote the well-being of indigenous people. I’m honored to represent a state that is home to some of the most powerful and politically active tribes in the nation. Throughout the course of this month, I am committed to reflecting on this proud heritage, honoring the rich legacy of social activism led by indigenous Nevadans like Sarah Winnemucca, and rededicating myself to honoring the trust relationship. We must all continue our work to restore and uphold the rights of indigenous people every day.”
