Las Vegas, Nev. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement denouncing the Trump Administration’s decision to revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian citizens who fled the catastrophic 2010 earthquake and cholera epidemic:
“The Trump Administration’s decision to revoke TPS protections for Haitians exposes nearly 60,000 vulnerable Haitians to deportation and rips families apart. By turning its back on people in need, the Administration demonstrates to the world its unabashed indifference to human suffering. I wholeheartedly condemn this heartless decision and I am committed to continuing to fight for those who have fled inconceivable death and destruction for safety and the opportunity to have a better life in the United States.”
BACKGROUND:
On November 16, Senator Cortez Masto cosponsored the Safe Environment from Countries Under Repression and in Emergency (SECURE) Act, which would create an avenue towards permanent residency for qualified TPS recipients. The SECURE Act would ensure that hardworking, law-abiding TPS recipients have the opportunity to remain in the U.S. without the risk of having their lives destroyed by the revocation of their TPS protection.
