Cortez Masto Commemorates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Las Vegas, Nev. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which falls on Monday, January 15th. This weekend, Senator Cortez Masto will act as Honorary Ambassador of the 36th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and participate in the Eternal Dream of Dr. King: A Martin Luther King Celebration, hosted by the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Las Vegas. She will also attend the Northern Nevada Black Cultural Awareness Society’s 30th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner in Reno.

“Dr. King left a monumental legacy for us. But his legacy is not stagnant, it lives. We have the duty to protect it and ensure that it continues to grow. We must provide a voice to the voiceless and guarantee that people of color, immigrants, LGBTQ individuals, women, and the economically disadvantaged are treated equally and respected by society and the law.

“Never before have we seen such an insidious threat to the progress Dr. King, and the millions of advocates for civil rights and equality for all Americans have accomplished, than what we have seen under the Trump Administration. Throughout his campaign and first year in office, President Trump has shown his disrespect of Dr. King’s legacy. Today, we celebrate the decades of progress and achievements and rededicate ourselves to the work of honoring Dr. King’s legacy and struggle for the shared humanity of every individual for equality, justice, and civil rights.

“The dream continues. La lucha sigue.”
