Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement announcing a grant of $50,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development agency to assist homeowners from Churchill, Douglas, Lyon and Storey Counties with repairs to their homes.
“When people live in homes with leaky roofs, outdated windows, safety hazards or that are not accessible to someone who uses a wheelchair or walker, families suffer ill health and threats to their safety,” said Cortez Masto. “Nevada homeowners who are elderly, have a disability or a child with a disability, or have a very low-income may struggle between paying for food, medicine and transportation instead of making critical repairs to their home. Families who are unable to qualify for affordable credit for the repairs may go years to put in a ramp or remove a safety hazard. The USDA’s Housing Repair Program helps families install a ramp for a child or adult with a disability or helps people fix the roofs above their heads or repair a window to keep their homes warm and avoid illness. In addition, this grant will help Nevadans make their homes more energy efficient, lowering high-cost energy bills. When families have stable homes, they have better health, better jobs and their children do better in school which is why federal funds from USDA make a big difference in improving the quality of life of families living in Nevada’s rural communities.”
