Cortez Masto Statement on Women’s History Month

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement in celebration of Women’s History Month:

“2017 was a landmark year for women. Millions of us marched across the nation to reiterate our fight for equality, and protest misogyny, sexism and discrimination. More women are running for elected office and even more are turning out in droves to vote for candidates who are champions for women’s rights. We persisted, despite being silenced by those who would rather us sit on the sidelines. There has been a sea change in attitudes toward sexual harassment after a growing number of women declared ‘me too.’ All of this, and more, because we will stop at nothing to continue the progress paved by women who came before us.

“On Women’s History Month, we celebrate the contributions and courage of women in history, whose fearlessness have made it better for women today. But as we look toward the future, let us also celebrate the women of today who are blazing their own trails and changing perceptions, cultural norms and social attitudes for the better. Women like Astrid Silva, a Nevadan who brought national attention to the plight of Dreamers; Parkland shooting survivor Emma Gonzalez, who is inspiring other student activists to make gun reform a priority for their generation; filmmakers Ava DuVernay and Greta Gerwig, who are smashing stereotypes and breaking barriers for women in the film industry; and the countless women who came forward to tell their stories of sexual assault and harassment, who bravely told the whole world that enough is enough.

“If events and milestones of last year are any indication of what’s to come, I am hopeful for the future and place my confidence in the next generation of strong women who will continue our fight. Though many may try to stop us, we are not done making history just yet.”
