Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement applauding the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) for awarding the State of Nevada $3,021,889 in Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (SEBTC) grant money, which will provide Nevada’s children with the nutrition they need during the summer months when they do not have access to school-based meals.
“Thousands of children in Nevada, and across the country, struggle with food insecurity, especially in the summer when schools are not in regular session. I am thankful the USDA’s Summer EBT program will provide up to 25,384 Nevada children and their families with the additional resources they need to put food on the table and stay healthy. No child should worry about where their next meal is coming from. I will continue to fight to bring more federal funding to these crucial programs that support our children and help them on the path to success.”
Background
The USDA’s Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (SEBTC) program was developed in 2010 to reduce summer food insecurity by providing a monthly summer benefit, via an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card, to the families of children who are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals during the school year.
