Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) hosted a roundtable discussion today with women veterans and leaders in the Southern Nevada veterans community at Las Vegas City Hall. The discussion focused on the challenges women veterans face as they transition out of the military, as well as the steps lawmakers can take to better support women veterans.
“Serving as a voice and an advocate for Nevada’s veterans is one of my top priorities as a United States Senator. The discussion today provided me with critical insights that will inform my work to improve services at the VA for returning service members. It also served as a reminder that women face a unique set of challenges while transitioning out of the military. This transition can be particularly difficult for women with small children, who often struggle to gain access to affordable child care services. I’m working to ensure that we repay veterans’ service to our country by strengthening our support system so veterans and their families can thrive in civilian life.”
BACKGROUND:
Senator Cortez Masto is a staunch advocate for veterans, and previously participated in a women veterans roundtable last year.
This month, she introduced legislation to improve housing on military bases and reduce physical and mental stress on members of Nevada’s remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) community. She is a cosponsor of the National Guard benefits and Parity Act, legislation that would ensure National Guardsmen and Reservists are entitled to the same benefits as their active-duty counterparts while deployed.
Senator Cortez Masto is committed to helping veterans advance in their careers. To that end, she has hosted a career fair for veterans and their families and cosponsored a bill to allow veterans to use their military experience as credit towards high-demand apprenticeship programs.
