Las Vegas, Nev. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) today joined Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada for its inaugural STEAM Career Conference for girls in 6th to 12th grade. The conference was an opportunity for girls to explore STEAM careers and hear directly from professionals in those fields.
“America’s girls are its greatest untapped resource to build a 21st Century economy. We must do everything in our power to encourage their interest and success in the STEAM fields. Girl Scouts is laying the groundwork for a new generation of female innovators. I was honored to meet these future leaders and will continue doing my part in Congress to ensure they have the necessary tools to pursue their dreams.”
BACKGROUND:
A former Girl Scout herself, Senator Cortez Masto has made technological innovation and creating educational opportunities for young women two of her greatest priorities. Last year, she introduced the Code Like a Girl Act, which would create two National Science Foundation (NSF) grant programs to encourage young girls to pursue computer science. The legislation would also provide funding to understand what motivates young girls to pursue STEM or STEAM education.
