Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) introduced the Countering the Chinese Government and Communist Party’s Influence Operations Act, bipartisan legislation that aims to combat the Chinese government’s foreign interference in the United States and elsewhere globally.
“Our democratic processes are increasingly under attack from authoritarian governments. We must fully understand those threats to effectively combat them. This bipartisan bill will raise awareness about the threat Chinese government interference poses to democratic societies around the world, while also preparing our government to develop policy solutions that protect our political processes and our national security.”
BACKGROUND:
The bill requires the Administration to develop a long-term strategy to effectively counter CCP foreign interference. It also requires the Secretary of State and the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) to organize an interagency task force to compile an unclassified report on the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) foreign interference efforts and recommend actions from Congress and the President. This bipartisan legislation would create a framework to help the U.S. better understand the nature of the threats posed by the Chinese government’s interference in democracy and protect our institutions.
