Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) cosponsored legislation led by Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) to support the auto industry and keep auto jobs in the United States. The American Cars, American Jobs Act gives consumers a $3,500-$4,500 voucher towards the purchase of a vehicle produced primarily in the U.S. or Canada and revokes tax breaks for auto manufacturers that send jobs overseas.
“The American Cars, American Jobs Act protects hardworking union households and Nevada families, puts money in the pockets of American consumers and encourages innovation that drives our economy. This legislation incentivizes consumers to buy cars – and especially electric, environmentally sustainable cars – that support jobs in Nevada, not overseas. I’m proud to sponsor a bill that puts over 2,200 Nevadans employed in automotive manufacturing first.”
BACKGROUND:
The American Cars, American Jobs Act aims to increase automobile sales from U.S. manufacturers by creating a $3,500 voucher (or $4,500 voucher for plug-in electric vehicles) toward the price of a new or leased car where at least 45% of the vehicle by value is of U.S. or Canadian origin. This act would provide an added non-income based incentive to buy American vehicles. This is a demand side incentive that puts money in the hands of consumers to stimulate the industry rather than executives utilizing the benefits to offshore production or enrich shareholders.
