Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) cosponsored the Hire Student Veterans Act, a bill led by Senators Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) and Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) to increase work opportunities for student veterans. The bipartisan legislation expands the existing Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) to allow student veterans using GI Bill benefits to pursue paid internships or part-time work while in school.
“Nevada’s 300,000 veterans deserve every support we can provide them as they transition home to civilian jobs. Removing barriers that limit their access to education and incentivizing businesses to hire student veterans are two critical steps to ensure our veterans can succeed when they return home. I’m proud to join this bipartisan effort led by Senator Rosen and to support our veterans in Nevada, and across the country, after their dedicated service to our country.”
BACKGROUND:
The Hire Student Veterans Act provides a work opportunity tax credit (WOTC) for hiring student veterans who receive educational assistance via the Department of Defense or the Department of Veterans Affairs. This bill also modifies the minimum work requirement from 400 hours to 120 hours, thereby allowing the tax credit to be used for hiring students part time or for paid summer internships.
