Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement to commemorate LGBTQ Pride Month:
“Fifty years ago, brave LGBTQ activists and allies started a movement by marching through the streets of New York City to demand an end to discrimination. Nevada, and the country, have made remarkable strides since the Stonewall riots of 1969, but homophobia and transphobia still exist in far too many workplaces, schools and communities throughout our country. This month marks an opportunity for us to recommit ourselves to fighting bigotry; and it’s a reminder to love oneself and each other, regardless of who you are or who you love.
“LGBTQ Nevadans are contributing so much to our communities. They’re small business owners, service members, community leaders and educators. I’m so proud to represent a state that’s home to institutions like the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada and Our Center in Reno that provide critical services and promote the human rights of LGBTQ individuals and allies. While there is so much to celebrate, there is still much more to be done. I’ll continue to fight to end the homelessness crisis for LGBTQ youth, combat bullying and stand up against any Administration that denies the fundamental right to equality for all Americans.”
