WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) announced that the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) awarded $495,502 to Reno-Sparks Indian Colony to hire, train, and equip law enforcement officers.
“Every community in Nevada benefits from adequate law enforcement to keep people safe and respond to emergencies,” said the Senators. “We applaud these funds to support law enforcement on the front lines in our Native communities, and we will keep fighting to protect and support tribes in the Silver State.”
BACKGROUND:
The COPS Office administered this award under the 2019 Department of Justice Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation (CTAS). Under CTAS, the COPS Office awards funding through its Tribal Resources Grant Program (TRGP). TRGP is designed to expand the implementation of community policing and meet the most serious needs of law enforcement in Tribal Nations through a broadened comprehensive program. The funding can be used to hire or re-hire full-time career law enforcement officers and village public safety officers, as well as procure basic equipment and training to assist in the initiation or enhancement of tribal community policing efforts.
