Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) cosponsored Senator Tim Scott’s (R-S.C.) Heroes Entering Roles of Education Service (HEROES) Act, which would address the shortage of teachers in America’s public schools by employing veterans as educators.
“Veterans have a wealth of experience and knowledge to share with our young people, and Nevada’s students stand to benefit from increasing the number of veterans in classrooms. I’m proud to support legislation that not only eases veterans’ transition to civilian life, but also secures exceptional educators to mentor our future generations.”
In addition to Senators Cortez Masto and Scott, U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R-Mont.) also cosponsored this legislation.
BACKGROUND:
The HEROES Act employs veterans in public schools across America to address the increasing demand and diminishing supply of educators. Additionally, the bill authorizes the Departments of Defense and Education to enter into public-private partnerships to streamline funding and recruitment to reach a wider range of education professionals.
