Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) today announced $449,849 in grants awarded to Nevada by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help public housing residents set and complete training and employment goals.
“Nevadans who rely on housing assistance to keep a roof over their heads often face other hurdles to reach economic stability. These grants allow Nevada to take a holistic approach to affordable housing by empowering residents, improving living conditions, and helping our seniors live independently. We’ll continue fighting to bring resources to the Silver State that support struggling families and seniors.”
BACKGROUND:
HUD’s Resident Opportunities and Self-Sufficiency (ROSS) grant program connects public housing residents with vocational training, GED classes, jobs, and other services to improve their access to economic opportunity. It can also enable low-income elderly homeowners to age in place. As participants’ earnings rise, their increased rent payments are deposited into an escrow savings account that they receive when they finish the five-year program. Many residents use their savings to buy a home or invest in education or a business.
ROSS funding was released to the following organizations:
- $210,599 was awarded to Proventus Place in Henderson, Nevada;
- $239,250 was awarded to the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority in Las Vegas, Nevada.
