Las Vegas, Nev. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) joined Nevada students admitted to the United States service academies and preparatory schools as well as their families via teleconference to congratulate them on their achievements.
“I’m so proud of these young men and women, who represent the best of the Silver State. Their hard work, dedication, and willingness to serve their country should inspire us all. I know they have bright futures as leaders, both at college and beyond, and I wish them tremendous success.”
BACKGROUND:
There are five U.S. service academies where accepted students attend for four years and graduate with a Bachelor of Science, earn a commission as an officer in the respective military branch with a minimum 5 year active duty service obligation.
Each year, interested students apply to the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and U.S. Merchant Academy which also requires going through the Congressional Nomination process in their state or another nomination source. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not participate in the nomination process and students can apply directly.
Forty two Nevadans were admitted to the service academies and their affiliated preparatory schools for the 2020-2021 academic year.
