Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) today announced $202,723 in grant funding to the Nevada State Emergency Response Commission (NVSERC) to fund emergency preparedness training and planning programs across Nevada. The grant funding was awarded through the Department of Transportation (DOT)’s 2020 Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness Grant program.
“These funds will help improve the safety of Nevada’s roads and railways and ensure that the State is prepared for any eventuality along our many shipping routes. The safety of all Nevadans is my top priority and I’ll continue advocating for federal resources that enhance our infrastructure and improve our state’s emergency preparedness.”
BACKGROUND:
The Department of Transportation (DOT)’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness Grant program awards states funding to:
- Develop or revise emergency plans and training activities to account for bulk transportation of energy products by rail and over the road;
- Conduct commodity flow studies to determine the frequency and quantity of hazmat shipments being transported through local communities;
- Train emergency responders to respond appropriately to incidents involving bulk shipments of energy products as well as other hazmat.
