Las Vegas, Nev. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement on the anniversary of the Social Security Act, which was signed into law by President Franklin Roosevelt on August 14, 1935.
“In 1934, in the midst of a global depression, President Roosevelt rallied the nation to the idea of Social Security: a commitment to American workers and to the elderly and infirm that they would have a measure of stability when they were no longer able to do their jobs. Seeing how deeply the Great Depression affected their elders, Americans understood the need for a pension program to protect the economic security and dignity of earlier generations and to lend a hand to those in need. In the wake of the President’s Executive Order, which undermines the security of the Social Security trust fund, I recognize and honor that promise we made decades ago. I will continue to work to ensure that the Social Security Program fulfills its obligations to those who contributed to it, and whom it benefits.”
