Las Vegas, Nev. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) today announced $487,160 in grant funding to help the Nevada Northern Railway repair their iconic Locomotive No. 40, the “Queen of Steam”. The grant funding was awarded by the Save America’s Treasures grant program through the Historic Preservation Fund. Senator Cortez Masto wrote a letter in support of this grant.
“The Nevada Northern Railway is one of the premier historic railroads in the country, offering everything from rides on original working steam engines to hands on history demonstrations for young Nevadans. I’m proud to announce funding for the restoration of the museum’s historic Locomotive No. 40, which served Ely residents from 1910 to 1941. Nevada has such a rich history, and I’ll continue advocating for federal support that will help preserve it for future generations.”
BACKGROUND:
The Save America’s Treasures grants fund preservation and conservation projects in 26 states. The National Park Service (NPS), in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), awards these matching grants to support the preservation of nationally significant historic properties and collections.
Senator Cortez Masto recently introduced the bipartisan STEP Act to provide economic support for organizations involved in promoting and hosting tourism, travel, or other special events. This legislation is intended to aid local economies by strengthening small businesses and live event companies who employ thousands of Nevadans.
