Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) today announced that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded $514,305 in grants to support education in Nevada that will fund distance learning, expanded course offerings, and training for parents to empower students with disabilities.
“I’m so glad to see these funds get to the Silver State to support students with a variety of unique needs, from those in rural areas to those with disabilities to those looking for specialized course offerings, including technical and advanced courses. I continue to work in the Senate to ensure that Nevada families can get educational resources tailored to their individual circumstances.”
BACKGROUND:
Senator Cortez Masto wrote a letter of support to the Department of Education for the grant award to Nevada PEP. The funds will be distributed as follows:
- $314,305 to the Nevada Department of Education to support efforts to develop distance-learning opportunities, expand course offerings, and ensure students have access to a broad range of advanced, career or technical, and other courses.
- $200,000 to Nevada PEP to fund programs providing individualized assistance, training, and resources that help parents work with educational systems to meet the unique needs of their children, set high expectations, and establish challenging objectives. PEP has operated as Nevada’s Parent Training and Information Center project since 1995. They serve over 15,000 individuals annually and collaborate with numerous local, state, and national organizations to enhance support for families who have children with disabilities and to expand meaningful opportunities for families to participate in the education of their children.
