Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) today announced that the Department of Education (DoE) has awarded $992,557 to Nevada organizations to support Native American students, Native language programs, and staff who work with students with disabilities.
“I’m pleased to see Nevada’s students getting this important federal support. Students with disabilities have unique needs, and staff need to stay abreast of ways to address those needs with continuing education and professional development.
“In terms of Nevada’s tribal communities, it’s important to make sure they get resources to help improve student outcomes and preserve Native language and culture. I will keep working in the Senate to make sure every schoolchild in Nevada has what she needs to thrive.”
BACKGROUND:
The funds will be distributed as follows:
- $597,769 to the state of Nevada Department of Education to support professional development for staff who work in early intervention, educational, and transition services in order to improve results for children with disabilities;
- $253,336 to the Yerington Paiute Tribe for services and programs to improve the educational opportunities of preschool, elementary, and secondary students;
- $141,452 to the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation to support the tribes’ efforts to maintain and revitalize their language and culture and to improve educational opportunities and student outcomes.
