Washington, D.C. – The Census Bureau just announced that the deadline for the 2020 Census was moved to tomorrow, October 15th. U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement urging all Nevadans across the Silver State to complete their census:
“The 2020 Census is incredibly important for all Nevadans. An accurate census means more federal funding for our state to improve our schools, hospitals, infrastructure, and so much more that working families in the Silver State depend on. More importantly, the census determines our state’s representation in Congress. And as we continue to navigate the challenges of COVID-19, a higher response rate for the census will ensure that we have the resources we need for our state’s long-term recovery from the pandemic. You count, and your voice matters. Take five minutes of your time to complete your census today.”
BACKGROUND:
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Senator Cortez Masto joined calls to the Director of the U.S. Census Bureau to put a plan in place to ensure that the expanding Coronavirus outbreakdidn’t impact the accuracy of the 2020 Census, and to make certain the health of census takers was protected.
Senator Cortez Masto also cosponsored the Fair and Accurate Census Act to address the significant challenges facing the Census Bureau as a result of the pandemic. The bill would provide requested extensions of statutory deadlines and appropriate $400 million for the Census Bureau to address the impacts of the coronavirus on the 2020 Census.
In August, Senator Cortez Masto joined Senators Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and 48 of their colleagues in a bipartisan manner to call for the extension of the statutory deadlines for the 2020 Census. The senators urged House and Senate leaders to include the extension in any upcoming COVID-19 relief package. In a separate letter, Cortez Masto urged the U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Census Bureau to honor their previously announced 2020 Census completion date to ensure an accurate count for Indian Country and the Native Hawaiian community.
