Cortez Masto Statement Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement marking November as Native American Heritage Month:

“November marks National Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor the cultural diversity and history of Native people and the ways they have influenced America. Nevada is home to 27 tribes that have unique traditions spanning generations and whose contributions have enriched the Silver State. As we take the time to acknowledge our country’s history towards tribal nations, let’s honor the strength and resilience of  American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians and remain steadfast in empowering  Native  communities. We must continue to raise awareness about the historic injustices and ongoing challenges  Native people endure, while recognizing the hope, innovation and self-determination that will build a sustainable future.

“I’ll continue to hold our federal government accountable to its trust relationship with tribal nations. I will keep fighting in the Senate to protect the sovereignty of tribal governments, promote the well-being of Indigenous people, and secure the resources needed to respond to and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.”
